Cancun Classic Competition

On January 1, 2013 9 athletes and 2 coaches from the NEGC competitive team traveled to Cancun, Mexico to take part in the 2013 Cancun Classic Gymnastics Competition.  The team traveled with 27 supporters made up of parents, siblings and grandparents.

On Friday January 4 the girls took part in a training session where they had the opportunity to see the venue and try out the equipment prior to the competition.  After the training session they had the opportunity to watch an NCAA college gymnastics meet between Ohio State University, Brigham Young University and Michigan State University.  This was a great experience for the girls and it was especially cool to watch a fellow Albertan Stephanie McGregor from Calgary compete for OSU!

Saturday was competition day and all the girls were nervous but also very excited!  It was the first meet of the year for all of our girls and for Kaelyn it was her first meet ever!  Kaelyn competed level 4 and won her first medal by earning a Bronze medal on Bars!

Keyana competed in level 5 and won a Bronze medal on vault and finnished 4th All Around!

Trinity competed in level 6 and competed her flyaway for the very first time!

Jenna competed in Level seven and did a great job competing many new skills.  She competed her flyaway on bars, back layout and front handspring front tuck on floor as well as back handspring on beam!

Darian also competed Level 7 and she won the silver medal on Vault in the Junior C Division as well as placing 6th in the all around.  Darian also competed many new skills such as a flyaway on bars, back layout on floor and back handspring on beam!

Madison and Sara also competed level 7 and placed 4th and 5th respectively on Vault in the Junior C age division.  Madison competed her flyaway on bars, back layout on floor and back walkover back handspring series on beam for the first time!  Sara rocked her back layout on floor and competed her cartwheel to round off series for the first time on bars.

Bailey competed level 7 as well and was in the Junior B division.  She competed her back layout on floor and her back handspring on beam for the very first time - she even stuck the back handspring!

Victoria competed Level 8 and competed her Tsukahara vault for the very first time and won the silver medal on vault.  She also won the silver medal on bars and competed her giant for the first time.  She had good showings on floor and beam as well and won the bronze medal in the all around!

We are so very proud of all of our girls and the determination and class they demonstrated at the competition!  We could not ask for a better bunch of girls - they represented NEGC and Canada very well!

Once the competition was over the girls spent Sunday at Dophinaris and Wet and Wild where they spent the day swimming with the dolphins and sliding on the water slides!  It was a great way to celebrate their hard work and accomplishments and to relax and have some fun!  The families also had a great time spending time together and getting to know one another better.  It showed me once again that we truly do have the best gymnastics family at NEGC!
